What Is a Digital Product Passport — And Why Does It Matter Now?

A Digital Product Passport is a structured, machine-readable digital record that follows a physical product throughout its lifecycle — from raw material extraction through manufacturing, distribution, ownership, and end-of-life disposal. Under the EU Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR), Digital Product Passports are becoming legally mandatory for products placed on the EU market. The regulation is phased: batteries lead from 2027, with textiles, electronics, vehicles, and more following through to 2030. The EU's central DPP registry launches in July 2026. For organisations selling into Europe — regardless of where they manufacture — DPP compliance is not a future consideration. It is an active procurement and market-access requirement.
